To limit global warming, active research is being conducted into ways to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The Blue Alkalinity project examines the possibility of storing CO2 from the air in the sea by increasing the alkalinity of the seawater.

SeaChem focuses on the training of a new generatation of researchers involved in the production and valorisation of seaweed biomass. The project aims to increase support for this in the EU by tackling current problems in offshore seaweed cultivation.

SUSANA

Natural solutions are increasingly used to protect our coasts from the ferocity of the sea. However, a lot of sand needs to be extracted for such solutions, which affects the marine ecosystem. SUSANA aims to map both ecosystems and the effects they experience.

Bankbusters

Billions of cubic metres are dredged every year to keep ports and rivers accessible. This material is usually considered a worthless waste product, but it can potentially play a role in the restoration of our eroded tidal zones and help improve our local ecosystem services. Bankbusters explores these aspects in detail.

Testerep

The Flemish coast as we know it is the result of a centuries-long interaction between the sea, land and humans. The coastline was very different in the past. The Testerep project deals with how the coastline has evolved over time and what lessons we can learn for the present and the future.

There is a great demand for new, better and more versatile enzymes. The sea can be an important source of such enzymes, but research is very expensive and time-consuming. The EnzyMares project is aimed at developing a toolbox to easily identify promising enzymes.

Europe has set a very ambitious mission for its oceans. Its success largely depends on how we deal with our oceans and seas. How can we accomplish effective protection and the development of a sustainable blue economy? The Prep4Blue project sketches the outlines of the mission in terms of research and innovation.

Several European partners work together in the project ‘Emerging ecosystem-based Maritime Spatial Planning topics in North and Baltic Seas Region’ to develop a European vision for maritime spatial planning. The focus is especially on a sustainable blue economy.

The space available at sea is limited. In order to make optimum use of that space, it is important to combine various activities in the same location. That is called multi-use or multiple use of space. The Horizon 2020 project UNITED is strongly focused on this.

Soft coastal protection measures such as dune, beach or foreshore replenishments present specific challenges in terms of design and maintenance for governments, engineering firms, dredgers and the insurance industry.
